EXCLUSIVE: Elie in his Restaurant, ELLE’S

Destaques

Elie Khoury, originally from Lebanon, moved to Porto in 2018. He had previously lived in Dubai for 20 years, where he made a name for himself in the food and beverage industry. Elie was drawn to Porto after a friend showed him videos of the city, which he described as a “living museum in open space,” rich in history and culture. Although he didn’t know much about Porto initially, he and his wife visited as tourists and felt a strong connection to the city. They were captivated by its beauty, proximity to the river and ocean, and its cultural and culinary offerings, including the renowned Port wine. This affinity led them to relocate and establish their business in Porto.

How did your food and beverage journey lead to successful venues like “Boudoir” and “Cavalli Club”?

I began my career in the food and beverage industry in Lebanon at the age of 23, opening various restaurants, pubs, and clubs until I was 30. The Lebanese food and beverage culture is deeply rooted in our history, centered around communal dining and tapas-style meals. This cultural backdrop shaped my passion for creating exceptional dining experiences.

After relocating to Dubai in 2000, I recognized an opportunity in the emerging restaurant and nightlife scene. I launched “Boudoir,” a French restaurant that transformed into a nightclub after midnight, and it quickly became a popular destination. I later opened “The 400 Club Dubai,” which was a top nightclub for four years. Partnering with Roberto Cavalli, I established the “Cavalli Club,” which became a premier venue in Dubai for several years. I also introduced “Play”, a top restaurant that earned Time Out’s Best Restaurant of the Year award multiple times.

Each venue was meticulously designed, considering every detail from the food and music to the ambiance and décor, ensuring a memorable experience for both locals and tourists.

Why did you choose Rua de Santa Catarina for your restaurant, and how did you plan to enhance the dining experience there?

I carefully select prime locations for my ventures, aiming to create memorable experiences for both locals and visitors. Rua de Santa Catarina initially seemed like a promising spot for its potential and historical charm. When I arrived in Porto, I saw that this street had limited dining options, but it was transforming into a vibrant area. This evolution influenced my decision to open a restaurant here, providing a fresh and exciting experience in a growing part of the city.

How has the support from the people of Porto helped you navigate the complexities of doing business in Europe?

Investing in Porto has been a rewarding experience, and the local support has been invaluable. Despite facing challenges and navigating complex bureaucracy, the warmth and assistance from the Portuguese people have made the process more manageable. The city’s energy and the helpful nature of its residents have been crucial in overcoming the obstacles of doing business in a new environment.

Given your background in Advertising and Marketing, what aspects of Porto drew you in and made you choose to settle there permanently?

I initially moved to Porto as part of a business expansion into Europe while still residing in Dubai. The flexibility during the pandemic allowed us to spend more time in Porto, where we developed a deep appreciation for the city’s charm and tranquility. Its peaceful streets, picturesque river, and unique landscape made us feel at home, leading us to decide to settle here permanently.

How do you view the evolution of Portuguese cuisine and its adaptability to new influences?

Portuguese cuisine is positively evolving, with increasing interest from international investors contributing to its growth. The influx of new ideas and renovations of old establishments are enriching the local culinary scene. Porto, in particular, offers numerous opportunities, and I am optimistic about its future.

Is there “room” for discrimination in Porto and Portugal?

Discrimination is not a prevalent issue in Porto. The Portuguese people are known for their welcoming nature and adaptability to the country’s evolving landscape. While there may be some concerns about the impact of new residents, Portugal’s openness to international business and its growing global reputation are indicative of a forward-thinking approach. Personally, I have felt a strong sense of belonging since moving here.
